Metro Hall Food Court Glass Block Wall

By Barry Burton, Burton Lighting Network

Metro Hall is a corporate centre in busy downtown Toronto. The food court is on the lower level and is part of the PATH system which is Toronto's underground walkway linking 27 kilometres of shopping, services and entertainment. It is a high traffic area in a very busy part of town.

The glass block wall is an architectural feature that provides an interesting background for patrons of the food court. The wall comes alive through the use of colour changing LEDs, all synchronized using DMX programming. The 12 columns behind the wall are each illuminated by 3 - 1 meter lengths of LED Minitube. The columns were mounted approximately 3 feet behind the glass block wall and are in groups of 3 that are 2 feet apart. Each grouping of 3 columns (9 LED Minitubes) has one SRC-181 controller and power supply. All 4 groupings are tied together with a single SRC-174 DMX control board. The results are a stunning eye-catching wall of colour.

Spirit of Canada Update

A Lot has happened since our last SOC update.

Albeit with a great deal of technical difficulties, Derek Hatfield has successfully completed the "B to B" race from Salvador de Bahia Brazil to Port L Foret France which is a mandatory race to qualify for the Vendee Globe round the world solo race later this fall. The race began November 29th with 15 sailors bidding to be the first to put the over 4200 miles behind them in first place. Conditions during the race ranged from drab and boring, to pounding seas which unfortunately took their toll on Spirit Of Canada. Rigging problems from rough seas slowed Derek's progress considerably. He also encountered several accidental jibes due to a faulty autopilot system. However, he did successfully cross the finish line on December 20th after more than 3 weeks at sea.

Since the B to B race, Spirit Of Canada has exhibited in 3 Canadian boat shows (Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver) in their never ending challenge of raising money to safely compete in the upcoming Vendee Globe. A major milestone was achieved with the 5000th individual sponsorship name being placed on the hull. Spirit Of Canada raises a great deal of its funding by donations from individuals who for a small donation receive a signed souvenir and have their name added to the others who will sail around the world "in spirit" with Derek this coming fall.

Derek and partner Patianne are now in France preparing to bring Spirit Of Canada back to Lake Ontario where they will fulfill sponsor sailing commitments and continue to ready the boat for the gruelling Vendee Globe. Magic Lite looks forward to our sail with Derek this summer on Lake Ontario! For more information on SOC and the Vendee Globe go to www.spiritofcanada.net.
