EFO Update

EFO ICE is making a big splash (or should we say chill?) with several supermarket chains' refrigerated case lighting needs.

EFO ICE (Illumination for Cold Environments) utilizes Fiberstars Efficient Fiber Optics Technology integrated with Acrylic rods which are used to replace fluorescent tubes commonly used to light frozen food cases in your supermarkets. An EFO ice system consists of 1 X 68 watt EFO illuminator with 6 fiber optic tails connected to special acrylic rods. Each system will light 3 freezer case doors with more even and brighter light than standard fluorescent systems.

Consider this: With EFO ice, not only are you saving energy over the fluorescents, you are also removing the heat produced by lamps and ballasts from the freezer - further reducing energy load requirements to keep the case cold. Typical payback for an EFO ICE system is 2 - 3 years when factoring in reduced energy and maintenance costs.

To date, EFO ICE has been installed in Publix, Albertsons, A&P, Costco and others in the United States and is being considered by several Canadian national companies.

The first installation of the EFO system in a Canadian supermarket has been completed.

The Whole Foods chain of supermarkets, have adapted this lighting application to their Canadian store because of the large success it has had in its American counterparts. This particular application has been incorporated into the Whole Foods chain of supermarkets in the United States.

The reason for implementing the EFO system was, the existing lighting (19 X 39 watt metal halides) produced unwanted high temperatures on the seafood area (excess of 7 degrees Celsius). As a result the amount of spoilage increased. Also, the uneven light levels across the display caused aesthetic concerns (range of 175fc to 35fc).

Benefits to implementing this lighting design include: decrease of temperature affecting the surface of the food, removal of UV light, the aesthetic appeal to the area, and improvement in even illumination across the entire display at 175fc. Although energy consumption was not a concern, the EFO system still managed to generate savings. Because of the success this application has received in the seafood section of the supermarket, a mock-up application has been applied to the produce section which is now also generating great reviews.
