Spirit of Canada Update

Our last newsletter found us wishing Skipper Derek Hatfield well in the Vendee Globe round the world race.

Unfortunately, half way through the race, Derek encountered severe wind and wave conditions and was knocked down while sailing south of Australia on route to Cape Horn.  While he had encountered several previous knock downs because of severe conditions, this one was bad enough that it caused damage to the rigging and Derek was unable to continue the race.

He did manage to limp up to Hobart, Tasmania and make repairs to the boat, however, in doing so was automatically disqualified since no sailor can accept outside assistance. The decision was not that difficult since it would have been impossible to safely finish the race unassisted with the condition the boat was in.  It was however, a devastating blow to Derek and his ground team as well as all those that have supported him.

Spirit of Canada is currently lying in New Zealand while Derek visits with his family in Canada and makes arrangements to get the boat back to Canada.  He will be updating us with future plans for competing in other Open 60 events in the near future.

I can honestly say our involvement with Derek Hatfield has been a supreme honour.  His dedication to persevere regardless of obstacles is remarkable.  His capabilities as a sailor and his incredible traits as a human being make Derek one of a kind.  Magic Lite will look forward to continued support of Spirit of Canada.

Congratulations on a battle well fought Derek!  We are truly amazed and inspired.

Building Outline -
Best Western

Over 2,000 feet of Magic Lite’s Micro LED Light Cable was used to create the building outline for the Best Western in Regina, Saskatchewan.  The hotel owner was looking for ways to save money and energy.  The lighting system that was previously used as exterior lighting was the incandescent Christmas style lamps.

These proved to be a maintenance problem and an energy waster for the owner.   Andre Bouvier of Electra Sales in Regina worked closely with the contractor, Sim Electric and the distributor, EECOL Electric to provide a solution.  Micro LED Light Cable was selected and installed.  Outdoor rated polycarbonate track was first installed and the Micro LED Light Cable was secured into the track.  Power supplies were placed in a remote location.  The results are not only eye catching and spectacular, but the new lighting system will provide the owner with years of energy and maintenance cost savings.
